Dog Exercise Sessions

During a long day spent by themselves at home, city dogs benefit greatly from mental and physical stimulation. A strategically planned daily walk or run helps to avoid countless problems that can arise out of canine boredom and pent-up energy. Not only do dogs get to stretch their limbs and take a potty-break, they also use their furry-noggins as they focus on proper loose-leash walking and site-seeing & sniffing!!
Each Dog Exercise Session with Cosmopolitan Pets NYC includes the following elements that we believe are important to having a fun and successful outside adventure:
- Individual attention
- Cardio exercise
- Positive reinforcement of loose-leash etiquette
- Bathroom break
- Socialization with neighbors and other dogs
- Post-exercise CosmoReport on activity
- Petting, affection, and a small treat!
Since each dog’s exercise needs and capacities are different, an individual outing (no herds!) allows us to tailor regimens and ensure that benefits are maximized. Depending on size, age, and temperament — walks and runs are customized to be brief & rigorous or relaxed & scenic (or a combination). The focused attention of a human companion additionally helps to keep doggies safe in a busy city full of traffic, “street-treats”, and potholes.
Socialization is another fun part of being outside that dogs love. The more frequently they see and smell other puppies, kids, and pedestrians, the less often they may be prone to adopt fearful or anxious tendencies (i.e. barking, cowering, jumping, etc.). We are dedicated to providing dogs we walk and run with positive experiences, so they learn to be comfortable and enjoy themselves in many different situations. “Polite hellos”, with all-4’s on the ground, during exercise outings help instill this confidence and avoid confrontations.
With clients’ consent we also pair dogs of similar size, temperament, and exercise needs on walks – after we have determined that loose-leash skills are appropriately mastered and that each dog will benefit from additional socialization.
In our experience positive-reinforcement is an incredibly successful route to training and rewarding desired dog behaviors (it can be also be much easier than other techniques). We are happy to bring along a handful of kibble, treats, or even a favorite toy to help reward good behavior and reinforce proper loose-leash walking. * Kibble and treats fed during walks/runs can be subtracted from daily feedings to avoid gaining unsightly and unhealthy lbs.
